Toe nail fungus facts
- About 1/4 of all people worldwide suffer from toenail fungus
- At age 70 toenail fungus affects almost half of all Americans
- It takes about a year for a toenail to grow from root to tip
- Nails grow slower in winter than summer
- Toenails grow at least 2 times slower than fingernails
- The fungus under your nails is attracted to keratin, one of your nails' substances. The fungus feeds on keratin deep under your nail in your nail bed
- Nails are dead cells that are made of the protein called keratin (like hair)
- A lot of people call a toenail infection an "Athlete's Foot". This is not correct, a fungus of the foot is called "Athlete's Foot". It appears as a scaling or cracking of the skin, especially between the feet's toes.
